“Are you that hardhat girl from Corrado?” I was totally surprised when I got asked this out of the blue, but I was even more excited. My very first time being recognized and called out. A hardhat milestone for the books!
As most of you know, I am a full time student at the University of Portland. Today for my professional development class I had to do a mock interview. I wore my red white and blue hardhat. Dress, blazer, hardhat and all- it was a good look. To prepare for this we had to prepare cover letters. I had no idea how to write a kick ass cover letter, so I looked it up and came across a very helpful article that I wanted to share with you all because I think it was a GAME CHANGER for my cover letter. And game changing is what we do here. I love the suggestion to start with humor. The article gives the example, “I considered submitting my latest credit card statement as proof of just how much I love online shopping, but I thought a safer approach might be writing this cover letter, describing all the reasons why I’m the girl who can take STYLIGHT’s business to the next level.” I went with the slightly humorous opening line to show employers who I am and my Hardhat life.
I said, “Growing up I loved watching Curious George; I still do watch, more often than I will admit. I often say, “I am ‘more curious than George.’” If you need a problem solving, driven, ambitious, dependable, and self-starting employee on your team, look no further.”
If you want to check out that article, here’s the link: https://www.themuse.com/advice/31-attentiongrabbing-cover-letter-examples! Whip those cover letters into shape! The interview went well. I was nervous my interviewer would frown on the hat, but she did not. I also got A LOT of comments on my hat today around campus. I suspect because I was dressed up? I am not sure why being dressed up would influence the number of comments, but it does. That is not a new observation, however. More studies to come on the subject in the future.
HARD HAT ON!
